President’s Corner and Safety Reminders

President’s Corner

Hi neighbours!

Well, it’s certainly been a great December for golf, but I’m hoping we’ll get some snow before Christmas (yes, I said it). There are a few topics I wanted to briefly discuss:

  • The CBC news has reached out to me looking for your interesting stories; there’s not much context that was provided, but I’d imagine they’re looking for comedic tales, unique experiences, etc. living here in the CGYC neighbourhood. I’m sure there’s a few out there. Please reach out directly to Emily Ridlington of the CBC: emily.ridlington@cbc.ca if anything comes to mind.
  • A friendly reminder to pick up your dog’s poop; I’m getting people sending me pictures of it in the street and I’d like to avoid this going forward.
  • We’re planning a ‘Winter Warm-Up’ night at the end of January at the Swan, so stay tuned for a note about that once we have more details.
  • I’m looking forward to our annual Christmas party this Sunday, 2:30-4:30pm at the club house with food and drinks as well as Santa, followed by Horse Drawn Trolley rides at 4:30pm to tour the neighbourhood. Hope to see you Sunday!
  • Don’t forget to light up the night at dusk on Sunday, December 20 for our annual Holiday Decorating contest! CGYHA panel of “experts” will award prizes to the most festive looking homes in the neighbourhood.

Best,

Holiday Security Reminder

Some notes from West Carleton and Rideau Goulbourn Community Police Centre:

“As Christmas Season approaches, we would like to wish you a safe and happy holiday.  We ask you to remember that winter roads create dangerous conditions and we urge you to slow down.  In addition, the holidays can be an opportune time for criminal activity.  The following are some of the more “holiday”concerns:

Theft from Vehicles:  Please do not leave valuables (including wrapped or unwrapped gifts) in plain view in your vehicle.  Remove valuables and Lock your vehicle!  Contact your local Ottawa Police Community Police Center for a free “All Valuables Removed” Card…they make great stocking stuffers!

Distraction Thefts:  Do not leave your purse in the shopping cart! Not all people are good intentioned; that person who was only looking for assistance in reading a label at the grocery store, was really a distraction so an associate could grab the wallet from your purse – Close it and keep it close!!!

Residential Break and Enters: Have someone watch your home if you are going away, use timers, have someone park in your driveway…etc. and of course, remove all valuables (gifts etc.) from view.

Frauds of all types– Namely CRA and Citizenship/Immigration Canada phone calls-Reminder that CRA and CIC do not contact by phone and ask for overdue money or money to settle warrants for your arrest. Do not divulge any information.

Have a safe and happy holiday season!
Merry Christmas!”

CGYHA.com wins!

cgyha.com will be our primary domain name. cgyha.ca will still be active because it received enough interest to justify it’s existence. .org and .net have been disable. Thanks to godaddy’s liberal 48 hour refund policy the total cost to the association is zero. Thanks to those who voted from Japan and the Netherlands!

Should cgyha.com be .ca or something else? by Jimmy Kim

Posted on Updated on

This is a topic that comes up every time our website is discussed.  Should cgyha.com be .ca or .org?  The reasons are simple for both sides.  Back in 2005 when cgyha.com was registered we did not qualify to get cgyha.ca.  At that time you had to be a national organization to get .ca domain names.  Does anyone remember .on.ca? ie. cgyha.on.ca would have been ours back then.  So the choice was between cgyha.com or cgyha.on.ca.  Due to the cost of buying and maintaining multiple domain names cgyha.com was chosen.

Fast forward to 2014.  The national requirement for .ca domains names is no longer required and domain names now cost about $9/year to register.

The argument for keeping cgyha.com is simple.  People are used to it.  We don’t want to confuse people by changing anything!  The argument for changing to a .ca name is that it is Canadian and changing to .org because most non-profit groups use it.  Or is there another choice out there?

cgyha.ca, cgyha.org, cgyha.net, and cgyha.com are all pointing to this website.  Try them out and vote for your favorite!
